Musician Sergio Mendes passes away at age 83

Family and friends and fans alike are all trying to process the information that's shaken the music world...

Brazilian musician, the legendary "king of bossa nova," Sergio Mendes, has passed away.

According to a statement, the Grammy winner passed away on Sept. 5 in Los Angeles.

He was surrounded by his children and his wife of 54 years, Gracinha Leporace Mendes.

"International music icon Sergio Mendes, who brought the joyous sounds of his native Brasil to the world, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2024 in Los Angeles," his family's statement read. "Mendes last performed in November 2023 to sold out and wildly enthusiastic houses in Paris, London, and Barcelona."

His family revealed that Mendes had been struggling with health challenges relating to long COVID in the months before his death.

They added that Sergio leaves "an incredible musical legacy from more than six decades of a unique sound first showcased by his band Brasil ’66."

Despite being born in Brazil, Mendes achieved most of his popularity while performing and recording in the United States of America.

He was busy seemingly his entire life:

His debut album, Dance Moderno, was released all the way back in 1961.

Mendes wouldn't be finished releasing music until his final album hit shelves in 2020, and he had been performing concerts as recently as 2023.

The music world has lost a legend, and the entire entertainment industry owes a serious debt to Mendes for bringing his flavor to the masses.
