Senator Schumer Calls for Menendez’s Resignation

Finally, after all this time, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is finally calling for the resignation of Senator Robert Menendez (D-N.J.).

Menendez was just convicted of, among other charges, a bribery scheme to influence policy to benefit another nation.

This is a call that should have taken place when the evidence against Menendez was laid out.

Corrupt to the Bone

Having lived in New Jersey for more than a decade, I can tell you flat out that Menendez has always been corrupt.

But, New Jersey Democrats are special people, having fallen into the pattern of pulling a handle for a recognized name rather than researching their candidates.

This was far from the first time that Menendez had been accused of corruption, but he has managed to evade the charges until now.

After the verdict was announced, Schumer finally decided to call for Menendez to step down from his seat.

He stated, “In light of this guilty verdict, Senator Menendez must now do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign.”

Menendez, to this point, has been defiant, even registering as an independent to defend his seat.

If Menendez continues to be defiant, Schumer’s next move is unclear on how he can go about removing Menendez from his seat.

According to Article 1, Section 5, Schumer could remove him if he could get a two-thirds majority vote, which I don’t see as a problem.

Fifteen Senators have been expelled since 1798, so this is clearly something that is rarely used, but I think we can all agree that nobody would criticize Schumer for doing so in this situation.

Menendez has to go, period, so do the right thing, Chuck, and floor the motion.
