Senate Democrats ready to block funding bill
When Joe Biden was in office, Democrats rarely, if ever, consulted the GOP for spending bills.
Now the GOP is paying them back by doing the same thing, and not surprisingly, Minority Senate Leader Schumer (D-N.Y.) is returning the favor by blocking the legislation.
The irony in all of this is that both parties complained about the very behavior they are both participating in now.
Block It
The good news for the GOP is that Speaker Johnson (R-LA) managed to get the legislation passed through the House, but it was along party lines.
That was a bad sign, as we knew the order had come down from Democrat leadership to block the legislation.
The House was the easy part, but not having enough in the Senate to beat the filibuster, we knew the Republicans were in big trouble here.
Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) sounds like he will not vote for the shutdown, stating, “For me, if the Democrats think that they want to burn the village down to save it, that’s terrible optics and that’s going to have serious impacts for millions and millions of people. I’m never going to vote for that kind of chaos.”
Senator Angus King (I-ME), who caucuses with the Dems, took different approach, stating, “We’re dealing with people — many of whom I suspect think a shutdown would be a good thing, and they could prolong it and use it to expand the president’s power even beyond what they’re already considering. So that’s something that has to be considered. This isn’t normal.”
Senator Schumer has openly stated that since the GOP did not consult with Democrats on the bill, he would push for his caucus to block the funding bill, which is not good news for Trump.
All of this seems very childish to me. Why not include Democrats in the crafting of the legislation to ensure that it passes, especially since you know you are going to need a handful of votes to pass it.
This is especially true since you already know that Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) is not going to support the legislation.
Democrats were trying to hand the possible government shutdown on Trump when Biden was in office, so you knew they were going to play these games now with Trump sitting in the Oval Office.
I don’t know about you guys, but with the damage a shutdown could do to Republicans, why decide on the posturing for a short-term funding bill? Save that fight for Trump’s “one, big, beautiful bill.”
