Senate Border Bill on Verge of Collapse
Two weeks ago, it looked as though there would be a showdown between Senate and House Republicans to pass a bipartisan border bill.
Since then, the details of the legislation have been posted, and it is hardly the immigration reform that we were told it would be.
To that point, the support for the bill has faded for the legislation, and that would include the most powerful Republican in the Senate walking away from it.
No Thanks
I have not read the bill in its entirety yet, but what I have read has been very disappointing.
As I have stated in other reports, this, at least to me, codifies what Joe Biden has been doing.
At the same, it would make 1.8 million illegal encounters an acceptable level, and that is hardly the case among conservatives.
Any Republican who backs this bill needs to be voted out of office, at least that is my opinion on the matter.
Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has not been nearly as enthusiastic about the bill as he initially appeared and now seems ready to just walk away altogether.
So much so, the Republican who helped pen the legislation, Senator Lankford (R-OK), may now also vote against it to send it back to the drawing board.
Lankford stated, “That's not voting against the bill.
“So that's not the final passage. That's the beginning point.”
Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE) added, “I don’t see this moving forward. Even before the speaker spoke [against it], I couldn’t see the votes.
“The next step is to look at how we fund Israel.”
Lankford does have some notable allies in the Senate, but I don’t believe he has enough to get the votes for this legislation to pass.
So, as it stands right now, the immigration bill that Biden wanted so dearly on his desk appears destined to fail.
