"I'm leaving, because with such a privileged role comes responsibility," she said in her announcement.
"The responsibility to know when you are the right person to lead and also when you are not. I know what this job takes. And I know that I no longer have enough in the tank to do it justice. It's that simple," she added.

"Ardern and her left-wing Labour Party have seen their support among the public fall to its lowest level since 2017," Breitbart News reported.
"A Kantar One News Poll last month found that the Labour Party had fallen by one percent to just 33 percent support, and therefore in the event of an election would likely be forced into forming a coalition government with the Green Party and the indigenous Māori Party," it added.

Ardern was a source of strong controversy over her extreme lockdown measures during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The nation was placed on lockdown for multiple days over a single case of the coronavirus in 2021.
The prime minister's strong "managed isolation" plans during the pandemic turned into strong disapproval from the nation's citizens that has now become part of her decision to step down from national leadership.
