REPORT: Trump wants to suspend security clearances at Jack Smith’s firm
A rather interesting report surfaced this week regarding a security clearance revocation by the Trump administration.
According to the report, Trump is looking to revoke the security clearances of all attorneys at the firm that provided legal services for Special Counsel Jack Smith.
You better believe the media will make this out as part of Trump’s revenge tour.
Take Them Back
The firm, Covington & Burling, is a massive international firm that has previously offered its services to former Obama Attorney General Eric Holder.
Lanny Breuer has also benefited from the firms services as a former Justice Department official who hired Smith in 2010.
At the time, Smith was put in charge of the Public Integrity Section of the DOJ.
What is confusing is that the firm reportedly had no role at all in the investigation of Donald Trump but only offered to provide legal services to Smith “when it became apparent that he would become the subject of a government investigation.”
According to Smith’s financial disclosure forms, he received $140,000 in pro bono legal services from the firm.
The firm stated, “Covington serves as defense counsel to Jack Smith in his personal, individual capacity.
“We look forward to defending Mr. Smith’s interests and appreciate the trust he has placed in us to do so.”
When Trump was asked about targeting the firm for revenge, he went off on the reporter, responding, “I’ve been targeted for four years, longer than that, so don’t you tell me about targeting. I was the target of corrupt politicians for four years and then four years after that, so don’t talk to me about targeting.” I understand Trump's point, but his being targeted is irrelevant to the question asked.
Attorney General Pam Bondi recently announced that her department will be opening an investigation via a “weaponization working group” that will take a deep dive into Smith’s investigation as well as all prosecutors and law enforcement who conducted an “unprecedented raid on President Trump's home.”
Leading up to the election, Trump vowed that he would not partake in revenge, but he added the disclaimer that his department heads had the green light to pursue what they saw fit if they believed there was nefarious behavior to target him.
I am not so naïve to believe that Trump never instructed Bondi and Patel to open these investigations, as I would guarantee it was a stipulation tied to them getting the nomination in the first place.
I just fear that our agencies are going to spend all their time, effort, and our taxpayer money chasing this down to exact revenge for Trump rather than doing what needs to be done to get this country back on the right track.
I know Trump feels wronged, but at some point, this all has to be put in the rearview or he risks fatiguing the country the way he did regarding the 2020 election.
Again, I am thinking big picture here… I am worried about 2026 and 2028, and if they spend too much time stroking Trump’s ego, we are going to lose control of Congress and hand the White House right back to Dems again in 2028… and that is simply unacceptable.
What this administration wants to accomplish is a 12-year plan, so winning in 2024 will have been for naught if we cannot follow it up in 2026, 2028, as well as the 2032 presidential election.
