REPORT: Texas Democrat Spent Half of Campaign Funds on Legal Fees

I have reported numerous times on how Trump has been spending campaign funds on legal fees, which I do not agree with.

If I am calling out a Republican over this, you better believe I am going to call out Democrats for the same.

To that point, Rep. Henry Cuellar, who was recently indicted on bribery charges, reportedly spent roughly half of his campaign cash to cover his legal fees.

Not What Money Is For

If a campaign was openly telling its donors that their donations were going to pay legal fees, I would have no problem with this.

That is not the case, though. Donors are giving money thinking they are paying for events and campaign ads, then their money gets used to cover big legal bills.

Like Trump, Cuellar appears to have spent the majority of his campaign funds to get himself out of legal trouble.

The last FEC filings for Cuellar show that he spent nearly $785,000 on legal services.

The majority of that money went to Clifford Chance LLP, the law firm that is representing Cueller.

Perkins COI also received about $47,000. This firm is known to represent political candidates so that money was likely used for legitimate campaign legal expenses.

Cueller has been accused of accepting roughly $600,000 in bribes.

The DOJ stated, “The bribe payments were allegedly laundered, pursuant to sham consulting contracts, through a series of front companies and middlemen into shell companies owned by Imelda Cuellar, who performed little to no legitimate work under the contracts.”

Cueller has pushed the narrative that he is being prosecuted because of his open criticism of Joe Biden regarding the border situation.

When this investigation was initially launched in 2022, the FBI searched Cueller’s home and office, but reports at the time stated that he was not the target of the investigation.

Conveniently, that also happened to be around the time when Cueller was getting more vocal about the border situation.

I will not be so bold as to accuse the DOJ of weaponizing itself against Cuellar on this front, but I will say the timing of the prosecution is pretty suspect.

Like Trump, it seems like the indictment was saved to coincide perfectly with the election to either take up or tie up someone who has been very critical of Biden on a key topic of debate during the election season.
