REPORT: Harris ‘Victory’ Campaign Still Billing Donors
We are now more than two months since the election, but Kamala Harris is apparently still collecting money.
Donors who signed up for recurring payments to the Harris’ Victory fund claim they are still being billed.
Needless to say, now that Harris is out of the race, they are a bit peeved that her campaign is still collecting donations.
What’s the Point
When you donate to a campaign, there is usually the option to donate every month, but you better read the fine print.
Some funds will stop after the election but others will continue until you stop the subscription, which was apparently the case with Harris’ Victory fund.
One Democrat donor who was caught in this cycle, stated, “It’s silly, out of touch, and needlessly takes advantage of our most loyal supporters.”
Campaign officials stated, “Those HVF donations are going to help Democrats across the country as we rebuild the party.”
However, they also noted that donors can cancel whenever they want, so this is more on the donor than it is on the campaign.
Having said that, I would think the campaign would make it clearer that in defeat, they would continue to collect for the next election or possibly add one last donation in December to balance the books for the last-minute expenses of the campaign.
From my experience, most campaigns halt subscription donations, which are largely small-money donations.
Mike Nellis, head of the Democratic online fundraising firm Authentic, stated that generally speaking, when the campaign is over, there is an expectation that the donations will be halted, but that was not the case here.
He explained, “If you’re rolling the committee into something that’s gonna continue to have an impact such as the DNC or another political campaign, I’m more than comfortable continuing the recurring donations so long as it’s transparent to the donor and compliant with ActBlue and the FEC.”
So, before you sign up, check the fine print, or, at the very least, ask your Siri, Google, or Alexa to remind you to cancel your subscription or they will keep popping that credit card every month.
