REPORT: ABC News President Stepping Down

ABC News president Kim Godwin appears to be out as the head of ABC News.

Godwin, who has a career that spans about four decades in news reporting, has reportedly resigned.

Godwin has been under serious pressure, recently being stripped of most of her power.

She’s Out

Several outlets are now reporting that Godwin emailed staffers to tell them she was going to step down.

The memo reportedly stated, “I have decided to retire from broadcast journalism.

“Anyone who’s passionate about what we do knows there’s no other business like it, so this was not an easy or quick decision.

“But after considerable reflection, I’m certain it’s the right one for me as I look to the future and prioritize what’s most important for me and my family.”

She concluded, “I leave with my head held high and wish the entire team continued success.”

After rising through the ranks, Godwin was appointed as the president of ABC News about three years ago.

This made her the first African American woman to head a national news operation.

It became clear that Godwin was in trouble during Disney's recent restructuring, which effectively removed most of her responsibilities.

Then, last week, it was reported that Disney's higher-ups were conducting a thorough evaluation of Godwin and deciding whether to keep her.

Godwin must have seen the writing on the wall, so she took the dignified exit over being walked out of the building.

Debra O’Connell, who was recently elevated in the restructuring, will take over for the time being.

O’Connell reportedly told staffers, “Since assuming this role in February, my goal has been — and will continue to be — to provide this team with the means necessary to build on our success and carry on the proud tradition of ABC News into a future full of opportunity and innovation.”

ABC News is far from alone in having issues with its ratings. Virtually every mainstream media outlet, including Fox News, has been revamping its lineup and changing out pieces to find the right mix.

In reality, with so much partisan reporting, people are simply no longer watching the news, finding other ways to get their information without tuning in to nightly broadcasts.

Even though Fox News continues to dominate ratings, the numbers are hardly what they were a decade ago when most people relied on TV over the Internet for their news.
