Records Request Made to See If Secret Service Was Part of Effort to Strip Trump Protection

The moment the assassination attempt against Donald Trump was made, you knew the conspiracy theories were going to start to pop up.

There is a doozie out there now that I probably would have dismissed right out of the gate a few months ago, but now it seems more likely than not.

That is the theory that the Secret Service helped craft the legislation penned by Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) to remove Secret Service protections from convicted felons who were sentenced to jail.

Where They In On It?

James Fitzpatrick, director of the Center to Advance Security in America, filed Freedom of Information requests regarding communications between the Secret Service and Thompson’s office, among others.

A total of nine Democrats co-sponsored Thompson’s bill, so Fitzpatrick is now seeking answers about the language in the bill and if the Secret Service helped craft the legislation.

Fitzpatrick has filed two FOIA requests, the first being for calendar entries and communications between one specific congressional staffer and the Secret Service regarding Thompson’s bill.

The second request is identical, only it contains a request for numerous other staffers.

Fitzpatrick stated, “We are hoping to find conversations regarding Thompson's proposed legislation to strip Secret Service protection from anyone, including President Trump, of their protection upon sentencing for the conviction of a felony.”

Fitzpatrick mentioned several outcomes of the request, one being that “DHS or Secret Service discussed this bill with Thompson's office and potentially discussed support for the bill or provided advice on how to craft it.”

That is not necessarily an issue because he would suspect that the agency be consulted.

However, as far as Fitzpatrick is concerned, the main issue is whether Thompson’s office was hiding the communications and not being transparent with the American people.

This week, Cheatle was to appear before House and Senate committees to explain the breakdowns in security that enabled an attempt on Trump’s life.

The calls for Director Cheatle’s resignation have grown louder, with at least one Democrat joining the chorus demanding she resign her position.
