Rapper Sean Kingston, mother arrested on fraud, theft charges

A well-known rapper is accused of running afoul of the law in a scheme that has also ensnared a member of his immediate family.

As Variety reports, Sean Kingston was arrested last week in California on fraud and theft charges originating in Florida, an event which took place just hours after his mother was also taken into custody in Broward County amid a raid on the performer's mansion.

Details of legal troubles

According to the outlet, a warrant was issued for Kingston's arrest in Florida following the search of his home, though he was out of the state for a scheduled performance.

The Broward County, Florida, Sheriff's Office issued a statement that said, “This evening, police in Fort Irwin, Calif., arrested Kisean Anderson, aka Sean Kingston without incident on a Broward Sheriff's arrest warrant for numerous fraud and theft charges.”

It was further revealed that Kingston was set to be booked into a San Bernardino, California, jail pending further developments.

Kingston's attorney, Robert Rosenblatt, said to NBC News, “We were in the process of having him return to Florida after his show. We want him back asap so we can show this is merely a civil case and not criminal. We look forward to challenging this case in court.”

Positive spin attempted

Seemingly aware of what already taken place at his home, Kingston posted an Instagram story ahead of his arrest which read, “People love negative energy! I am good and so is my mother!”

He then assured fans, “My lawyers are handling everything as we speak.”

Even so, authorities confirmed that the situation unfolded as part of a continuing investigation into Kingston and his mother.

A civil lawsuit commenced by Ver Ver entertainment was reportedly responsible for launching an investigation into potential criminality, as it alleged that Kingston had retained company property for which he had not paid.

Dennis Card, an attorney who represents a plaintiff in the case against Kingston, suggested that his apparent financial means are nothing but a facade and that “he lures people using his celebrity into having them release things without him paying for it and then he simply never pays.”

Precisely where things go from here in terms of the charges against Kingson and his mother, however, only time will tell.
