Racing Legend ‘Ohio George’ Montgomery Dies Passes Away

One of the top drag racers of all time has passed away.

"Ohio George" Montgomery died on August 24. He was 90 years old.

He is Number 28 on the top 50 racers list in NHRA history.

The Gasser

When Montgomery entered the sport, everyone was put on notice.

His dominance started in the 1950s and it continued for decades, making him one of the greatest gasser drag racers of all time.

For those not familiar with drag racing, gasser racing is the racing of custom-built cars manufactured from the late 1950s up until the early 1970s.

Montgomery won the Gasser title seven times during his career, also winning the Gas Eliminator Challenge three times.

Montgomery's first title came in 1959, with a pass of 11.94 seconds, traveling 124.95 miles per hour.

Just to show you how the sport evolved, when he won his title in 1967, he made his pass in 8.92 seconds, traveling at 134.32 miles per hour.

He is a member of the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame as well as the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, which he was inducted into in 2020.

Montgomery left competitive racing in the early 1980s, but he stayed very active in the sport.

For 15 years, he built and serviced custom engines, supplying all of the Buick V-6 spec engines for the Indy Light series from 1986 through 2001," reported NHRA.

If you would like to learn more about Montgomery, I would highly suggest reading his book, "' Ohio George' Montgomery: Drag Racing's Gasser King."

If you have never seen these races in person, it is a ton of fun, but bring those earplugs because these cars are LOUD!
