Prince Harry's British residency is over

Prince Harry has just renounced his British residency.

This, according to the Daily Mail, comes just four years after Harry claimed, "The UK is my home and a place that I love. That will never change."

Harry made this statement in 2020 after he and his wife, Meghan Markle, decided to no longer perform their royal duties.

Since then, Harry and Meghan have spent much of their time in the United States, and it appears that this is the country that Harry now considers home.

It's official

This week, according to the Daily Mail, Harry filed paperwork, in the United Kingdom, and it was in this paperwork that he made it clear that the United States - not Britain - is the country in which he has his primary residency.

"The Daily Mail can disclose that Prince Harry has updated his records in this country to make clear that he no longer lives in Britain," the outlet reports.

It continues, "Filings published by Companies House today for 'Prince Henry Charles Albert David Duke of Sussex' record that his 'New Country/State Usually Resident' is now the USA. It was previously recorded as the United Kingdom."

The Daily Mail includes a photograph of the document that Harry filed on April 15, 2024. After listing his name and his date of birth, he writes the "United States" next to "new country/state usually resident."

Four years ago, on this same form, Harry wrote "United Kingdom" next to "new country/state usually resident."

Background

The New York Post provides some more background information on the issue of Harry's residency.

"In 2020, Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, 42, relocated to America, where they now live with their kids Prince Archie, 4, and Princess Lilibet, 2, in Montecito, Calif., in a move dubbed 'Megxit,'" the outlet reports.

It continues, "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were evicted from their UK home, Frogmore Cottage — which the late queen gifted them following their 2018 wedding. They finally vacated it in 2023, which left them with no official UK residence. Now, when they visit the UK, they have no place to stay and must stay with friends or in a hotel."

The Mirror notes that, on the form mentioned above, Harry backdated the residency change to June 29, 2023, which, according to the outlet, was "one of the last days he and Meghan had access to their old UK home of Frogmore Cottage before they handed back the keys."

It appears that, at this point, Harry has cut most ties with his country of origin, and one would have to suspect that Meghan is almost entirely the reason why he has done so.
