As we speak, Hurricane Ian is roaring toward Florida.
If current projections are accurate, it will shred Tampa Bay, an area never having been hit with a hurricane like this before.
Common courtesy would be that Joe Biden would be in regular contact with Governor DeSantis to see what he needs and what he could expedite.
White House Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed that is not the case.
But You’re a Republican
Biden has visited and consulted with several Democrat governors.
That is no longer the case with Republicans and Jean-Pierre even admitted it.
When asked about the communications between the White House and DeSantis, she responded, “What the president believes is it is important that federal resources is provided for the people of Florida.
“That is the most important thing. To make sure that we are there for them in this time of need and that’s why the president reacted right away to make sure that we are able to surge resources before and he did this before landfall.
“So that is the most important thing, it’s about the people of Florida, it’s not about public officials especially in this time and so again, as President of the United States, as president of folks in red states and blue states, he’s going to keep that commitment and you have seen him do that over the course of 19 months where there have been extreme events, extreme weather again, in red states and blue states, and he has done his job as president to make sure that we are there for the people in the state.”
She later added, “And so that’s a perfect example, Kelly O, when you mention the governor of Mississippi. You’re right, they didn’t speak and we still were able to deliver for the folks in Jackson and for the folks of Mississippi.
“You had our EPA administrator on the ground, you had FEMA [Federal Emergency Management Agency] administrators on the ground and not just them but also folks who work for those two agencies. And you had the Army Corps. of Engineers.
“So you had the full power of the administration, we surged resources on the ground to make sure that we did everything that we can to help the folks of Mississippi. This is the same, there’s no difference here.”
I think she is missing the point.
If you are a president of unity, you reach out, especially during times of crisis, to see what is needed, even if the question has already been asked and answered.
There are few times that I will say a president has to show leadership, but this is one of them, and Biden is failing epically on that front.
Say what you want about Trump, but the man picked up the phone and went to ground zero regardless of party affiliation during these times.
Joe Biden… not so much.
