A memo was leaked that was traced back to a SuperPAC that is supporting Ron DeSantis in the presidential election, reported Newsweek (they actually have the full memo up online).
The memo laid out a game plan for DeSantis to follow during the debate.
The suggestions laid out in the memo have received some serious criticism, even being called "stupid," but I would only half agree with that.
Never Back Down
The Never Back Down SuperPAC is DeSantis' biggest supporter, at least as far as I know.
With that support, of course, comes influence, so the bigger donors are surely going to have their say about what they think DeSantis should do.
The memo stated:
"There are four basic must-dos," one of the memos urges Mr. DeSantis, whom the document refers to as "GRD.
"1. Attack Joe Biden and the media 3-5 times. 2. State GRD's positive vision 2-3 times. 3. Hammer Vivek Ramaswamy in a response. 4. Defend Donald Trump in absentia in response to a Chris Christie attack," reported Breitbart.
First, to be clear, this did not come from anyone on DeSantis' campaign staff, so it is not a formal strategy, a point made by Andrew Romeo, DeSantis' campaign communication director.
He stated, "This was not a campaign memo and we were not aware of it prior to the article. We are well accustomed to the attacks from all sides as the media and other candidates realize Ron DeSantis is the strongest candidate best positioned to take down Joe Biden."
Now, as far as that strategy goes, I agree with all but one point.
DeSantis needs to attack Joe Biden and the treatment by the media, no question.
Second, he does need to push his vision as much as possible so voters can get acquainted with him. This is DeSantis' first real introduction to the entire nation, so he needs to make the most of it.
He also needs to attack Ramaswamy, who is flying up the polls after being embraced by the Trump campaign. I have said it before, and I will say it again… this dude is no conservative and a complete fraud. The man says he is open to pardoning Hunter Biden and legalizing hard drugs… I mean, c'mon, don't take the bait just because he sucks up to Trump every chance he gets.
Before I start getting hate mail, please understand I am looking at this last point as a political strategy, not in favor or opposed to Trump.
Regarding DeSantis defending Trump against Christie's attacks in lieu of his absence, that is about as idiotic as it gets. He should neither agree nor disagree, simply letting the attack sit as they may since Trump is not expected to show up.
Trump has hammered DeSantis during this campaign, and any defense of him will come off as weak, so let Christie take his shots and stay out of the line of fire.
Trump will surely be on Truth Social firing off attacks if he is not at the debate, so let him defend himself.
This is one of two chances that DeSantis will have to make an impact before the primary voting starts, so do not waste it championing Trump. The person that wrote that particular note is a complete and utter moron.
Now, as I stated, even if Trump is not there, I would expect him to be on Truth Social live-posting responses to any attacks. I expect most of those attacks to be aimed at DeSantis and Christie, who is clearly in this race to try to take out Trump.
