PA Governor Calling for Review of Musk Giveaway

Elon Musk and his The America PAC are trying to drive voter registration for the 2024 election.

As part of his drive, he is offering registered voters in the seven key swing states who sign his petition supporting the Constitution an entry into a $1 million giveaway.

The drawing takes place every day through election day, but Pennsylvania Governor Shapiro believes this could be illegal, and he is not alone.

Driving Voter Registration

You cannot pay people to sign up to vote, but Musk is not doing that.

The “giveaway” merely requires that you be a registered voter to sign up.

Some might say that it is semantics and that the contest is completely illegal.

One person who sees it that way is Richard Hasen, a professor at UCLA School of Law, who claims the contest violates 52 U.S.C. § 10307(c), which states: "Whoever knowingly or willfully … pays or offers to pay or accepts payment either for registration to vote or for voting shall be fined not more than $10,000 or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."

Hasen added, "This isn't a particularly close case—this is exactly what the statute was designed to criminalize.”

PA Governor Josh Shapiro also commented on the offer, stating, “I think there are real questions with how [Musk] is spending money in this race. How the dark money is flowing, not just into Pennsylvania but apparently now into the pockets of Pennsylvanians.”

He went on to call the offered “deeply concerning.”

Also keep in mind that Dems are targeting Musk not only for having endorsed Trump but also because Trump has stated that he will likely add Musk to his administration.

Musk has hinted that he would accept a job, especially if it involved oversight of government agencies, which he would like to reduce by about 75%.
