OPINION: Still Time for Alternatives to Biden, but Time Running Out

With Biden's horrific polling, more and more Democrats are starting to suggest that the party needs to look elsewhere for a candidate at the top of the ticket for president.

The problem for Democrats, however, is that time is running out.

Primary voting starts in little more than three months, so the window to get someone else in place of Biden is starting to close.

Backfired

I believe the plan for Democrats has always been to have Trump as the GOP candidate.

They (and I, for that matter), thought that once the indictments and legal problems started to fall, voters would back away from Trump.

The difference is that I thought primary voters would move on to another candidate, but the exact opposite has happened.

Trump is running circles around the other GOP candidates, but there is much worse news for Democrats.

They assumed that even as bad as Biden is doing, it would be a walkover for Biden in the general election, but Trump and Biden are tied in every national poll there is right now.

Additionally, Trump has a significant lead over Biden in some key battleground states already, so this is far from a given that Biden will win.

Right now, the closest competition that Biden has is RFK Jr., but Joe's lead over Kennedy is as big as Trump's over DeSantis.

If Biden falters for some reason, I have no doubt that Gavin Newsom's 2028 bid gets pushed up by four years, as he seems to be the highest-profile candidate that Democrats would have.

At one point, there were rumors that Pete Buttigieg could thrown into the mix, but he has been a disaster as Secretary of Transportation, so I don't see that happening right now.

I stick by the idea that Biden will never back out, simply because he cannot do that if he wants to keep protecting Hunter Biden and his family members from corruption charges.

Joe is the horse, and unless he dies, he is going to ride this one out.
