On-duty Secret Service agent accidentally shot himself

A member of the Uniformed Division of the United States Secret Service (USSS) shot himself on Saturday night in Washington, D.C., reportedly injuring himself.

According to the USSS, which spoke with reporters, the "negligent discharge" happened just before 8 o'clock in the evening near the intersection of 32nd and Fessenden streets in the city's northwest, as The Western Journal reported.

The shot went off as the on-duty agent was handling his service weapon during a time when he was not working with a protectee.

According to USSS Uniformed Division public information officer Lt. Paul Mayhair, no more injuries have been reported.

From the Secret Service

The Office of Professional Responsibility within the Secret Service will be conducting an investigation into the facts and circumstances surrounding this incident.

Republican Senator Josh Hawley laid out the Secret Service's shortcomings in relation to the first assassination attempt on former President Trump in July in a comprehensive report that was released early Monday morning. The report included new whistleblower allegations that are "highly damaging to the credibility" of the agency, among other things.

The House Task Force on the Attemptation to Assassinate Donald J. Trump received supplemental information from Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, who provided them with his report.

Hawley found a "compounding pattern of negligence, sloppiness, and gross incompetence that goes back years, all of which culminated in an assassination attempt that came inches from succeeding."

The senator went on to expand on the results of the investigation saying, "On July 13, 2024, former President Donald J. Trump was nearly killed by an assassin’s bullet while hosting a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and the U.S. Secret Service failed to prevent it.

"It was the most stunning breakdown in presidential security since the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan."

According to Hawley, the Intelligence Community, the Secret Service, and DHS "have all tried to evade real accountability."

"These agencies and their leaders have slow-walked congressional investigations, misled the American people, and shirked responsibility," the report states.
