Olympian Michelle Fazzari passes away shortly after Paris games

Canadian Olympic athlete Michelle Fazzari has been reported dead.

Fazzari, who was just 37 years old at the time of her passing, lost her battle to cancer.

Her family has since shared a statement confirming her passing.

“Heaved gained the most beautiful angel this morning. Our dear daughter, sister, wife, aunt, cousin and friend has gone to Heaven. Our family would like to thank all of you for your love, prayers and support during the last few years. She had the purest heart and loved more than anyone,” the family’s statement said.

The family of Fazzari also confirmed the “celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Fazzari has been very public about her battle with cancer since she learned of her diagnosis.

The athlete and her family first noticed something “off” with her body when she was competing at a wrestling tournament a few years prior.

Her body just did not seem to recover the way it usually does.

Fazzari began to experience extreme fatigue.

It was not long after that she would learn cancer was the cause of that fatigue.

Her twin sister, Stephanie, shared a statement at the time about Fazzari’s diagnosis.

“As someone who's wrestled with huge injuries in the past, and still goes on the mat and conquers it, for her to complain about this, we knew something was wrong. But did we ever in a million years think cancer? No, we did not think cancer,” Fazzari’s sister said.

Fazzari fought a courageous battle with cancer for nearly three years before losing the fight.

Her wrestling legacy will not be forgotten. She was an absolutely incredible athlete, winning gold medals at major international tournaments like the 2013 World Cup and Francophone Games.

In 2016, Fazzari became an Olympian.

At least she was able to survive through the 2024 Olympics, giving her one last opportunity to reflect on the pride, dedication, and honor that goes along with being involved with the games one more time.

We pray for everyone grieving the loss of this incredible human being and athlete.
