Ocasio-Cortez facing backlash from her own party

In a surprising turn of events, members of the Democratic Party are actually turning on one of their own - U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

The really surprising bit is why some Democrats are turning on Ocasio-Cortez. It is not because she is a far-left extremist. Rather, it is become she is not extreme enough.

The New York Post reports that the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America is considering whether or not to formally censure Ocasio-Cortez.

The group alleges that Ocasio-Cortez has been too easy on Israel, amid the country's ongoing war with various Iran-backed terrorist groups.

The details

Among other things, the Post reports that the group is not happy about Ocasio-Cortez's support of House Resolution 888.

Per the outlet:

The uber-liberal group’s resolution blasts Ocasio-Cortez for several statements and votes, including supporting House Resolution 888, which “affirmed Israel’s right to exist” and “recognizes that denying Israel’s right to exist is a form of antisemitism.”

The group alleges that "These actions [by Ocasio-Cortez] violate DSA’s democratically decided program of Anti-Zionism and Palestinian liberation."

The Post goes on to report:

Other alleged issues include: The congresswoman’s support for Resolution 996, “which only condemned Hamas, and not the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] for sexual violence,” and anti-human shield Resolution 5917, which allowed the president to sanction members of “Palestine Islamic Jihad.”

The Post continues summarizing the allegations against Ocasio-Cortez, writing:

The Bronx Democrat signed onto an April 20 congressional letter that affirmed Israel’s right to self-defense and signaled support for the country’s “Iron Dome” defense funding. The House member made statements on X, formerly Twitter, on June 11 “which used atrocity propaganda to legitimize the genocide in Gaza” about pro-Palestinian protesters saying they were guilty of “atrocious antisemitism.” A June 12 tweet that DSA said conflated “rejecting Israel’s right to exist ” with antisemitism as “conspiratorial”

The crazy part:

The idea that Ocasio-Cortez shows any support for Israel is a bit absurd if you have been following Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow "squad" members.

One does not need to go too far back to find an example.

Earlier this week, The Hill reported that Ocasio-Cortez went after the Biden-Harris administration for allowing, in her view, an "unrestrained" Israeli government.

She wrote:

The horrors unfolding in northern Gaza are the result of a completely unrestrained Netanyahu gov, fully armed by the Biden admin while food aid is blocked and patients are bombed in hospitals. This is a genocide of Palestinians. The US must stop enabling it. Arms embargo now.

Apparently, though, this is not extreme enough for the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America.
