Noem Gets Bipartisan Support in Senate Vote for DHS Secretary

I have to admit that I have been rather surprised thus far with the confirmation hearings for Trump’s nominees.

While several have gone as I had suspected, such as Rubio for Secretary of State, I was very surprised that Governor Kristi Noem was so easily confirmed as DHS Secretary.

Shockingly, seven Democrats voted in favor of her nomination, with a handful of Dems either not voting or not having shown up for the vote.

She’s In

With the seven Democrats voting for Noem, she passed through easily with a vote of 59-34.

This was a stark contrast to Pete Hegseth's nomination.

Hegseth needed JD Vance to step in and break a 50-50 tie vote to be confirmed to his position.

The Dems who voted in her favor were Senators John Fetterman (D-PA), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Andy Kim (D-N.J.), Gary Peters (D-MI), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI).

Some of those names got my attention, as that is not exactly the list I would have suggested prior to the vote.

Kim, for instance, was clearly against Noem overall, but he approved her, stating, “I had several direct conversations with Governor Noem. While we disagreed strongly on a number of key points of Trump’s agenda, we both agreed that we could more effectively raise and try to address the pressing needs and concerns of communities and families in New Jersey if we communicate and engage directly with one another.”

Peters liked that Noem had stated she would try to work in a bipartisan fashion, stating, “Given her openness to working on a bipartisan basis to address these and other threats to our homeland security, I voted to advance her nomination out of committee and send it to the Senate floor for consideration.”

Another surprising aspect was the fact that some Senators chose not to vote at all.

The seven Senators who chose not to vote were Sens. Angus King (I-ME), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Tina Smith (D-MN), Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Jerry Moran (R-KS.).

In my eyes, if you don’t cast a vote, you have no dog in the race one way or the other if things go good or bad, so I will not entertain a single word from those seven if they start firing complaints about Noem in the future.
