NFL Team Executive Gil Brandt Dies at 91

Former NFL executive Gil Brandt died Thursday at the age of 91, according to a statement from the Dallas Cowboys.

Brandt served as a team vice president during the Cowboys' successful years in the 1980s.

“We are so deeply saddened by the passing of Gil Brandt – a true icon and pioneer of our sport,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said.

“Gil was at the very core of the early success of the Dallas Cowboys and continued to serve as a great ambassador for the organization for decades beyond that,” Jones continued.

“His contributions cemented his spot in the Ring of Honor. He was my friend and a mentor not only to me, but to countless executives, coaches, players, and broadcasters across the National Football League, which rightfully earned him a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame where his legacy will be celebrated forever," he added.

"Brandt worked for the Cowboys from their inception in 1960 to 1989, when Jones bought the team and hired his own people," NFL.com reported.

"During that three-decade span, Brandt was part of a triumvirate -- along with head coach Tom Landry and team president/general manager Tex Schramm -- that built 'America's Team,' assembling a roster that included QB Roger Staubach, RB Tony Dorsett, WR Drew Pearson, DB Mel Renfro and many more illustrious names," it added.

Brandt was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame in 2019 following his decades of dedication to the Cowboys.

Prior to his work in Dallas, Brandt also worked with the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers before joining the Cowboys when the team first began in 1960.

Brandt's legacy will live on both in the Hall of Fame and in the amazing seasons of the teams he helped create as he is remembered by multiple generations of fans and players.
