We are starting to see the establishment rise up and fight the resistance in the House.
I like Newt Gingrich as a contributor and more often than not, I side with his opinion, just not this time.
Gingrich is going off on the resistance to Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) being elected as the House Speaker.
Honestly, he sounds like Democrats talking about conservatives, trying to shame the resistance to buckle and hand McCarthy the gavel.
Psychos
I realize I am probably in the minority on this one, but that is because I agree with several of the issues that the resistance has brought up that it wants to be addressed by McCarthy.
Eighteen people is a small number, but not that small. And it is a monster number when you consider how thin the advantage is for House Republicans in the majority right now.
McCarthy could have sat down with this group and come to an agreement, but he chose to ignore them.
He made one concession on replacing the House Speaker, but even that was to the full demand of the group.
Now Gingrich is piling on, stating, “This is a fight between a handful of people and the entire rest of the conference. And they’re saying they have the right to screw up everything.
“Well, the precedent that sets is; so do the moderates, so do the members from Florida. I mean, any five people can get up and say, ‘I’m going to screw up the conference, too.’ The choice is Kevin McCarthy or chaos.”
He added, “I think it’s a psychological problem. These guys can’t count straight. They can’t play tic-tac-toe. They can’t accept victory.”
Well, clearly, the issues they have are important enough to stand firm and not give in. And what is good is victory if their voices are silenced over the next two years?
Secondly, if McCarthy would incorporate some of their demands to his agenda, this would not be happening.
What Gingrich is proposing is for them to just shut up and go with whatever the party wants, but that is not how this is supposed to work.
They have a voice and now they have a rare occasion where their number matters, so they are taking full advantage of it.
As I said in my last piece, McCarthy could end this right now, but he chooses to stand firm himself.
Let’s just see who blinks first.
