New Senate Leader Says Trump Border Plan Priority
Word came down this week that Senator John Thune (R-S.D.) will be taking over as the Senate Majority Leader in the next session of Congress.
Thune, by all accounts, is a McConnell clone, so I was less than excited to learn that Republicans had elected him to this post.
The new leader is saying all the right things, for now, including putting Donald Trump’s border agenda atop his list of priorities.
Let’s Get to Work
I don’t like Thune and I don’t trust him, but word on the street is that behind closed doors, this is who Donald Trump wanted as majority leader.
I find that surprising considering that Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) was in the mix and the only clear MAGA candidate of the three.
For the life of me, I cannot figure out how Thune came out of this scrum with the title, but he has it, so we are going to have to deal with it.
Thus far, Thune has stated that he fully backs Trump’s agenda, including this mass deportation plan.
Thune, after winning the leadership vote, stated, "Now the real work begins delivering on our agenda.
"That starts with ending the Biden-Harris border crisis and deporting illegal immigrants."
One of the biggest issues with McConnell from the most conservative of members was the addition of amendments to legislation, which Thune says he supports.
On this, he stated, "[A]ll members of the Senate, and not just the members of a particular committee, should have a voice in final legislation through amendments on the floor. Members should assume that amendment votes will be the norm.”
I don’t know if Trump was throwing a bone to the establishment or he and Thune came to some type of agreement behind closed doors, but something clearly happened to move Trump off Scott and behind Thune.
Like I said, I don’t like him, but I will give him the chance to show us he will do the right thing and not block the GOP agenda under Trump.
