Nebraska GOP Official Resigns After Electoral Rules Changes Fails

Last week, Republicans in Nebraska were trying to have the electoral state rules changed.

Currently, a candidate can “steal” an electoral vote by winning a specific district regardless of how the popular vote in the state stands.

Republicans, including the Governor, wanted to eliminate this rule to make it an all-or-nothing state like most other states, but the effort failed.

Currently, there are only two states in the country that allow for a split electoral vote.

Maine and Nebraska are the only states that would allow a split electoral vote, which is far from how our Framers and Founders envisioned the Electoral College.

The Electoral College was specifically established so that all states would have representation and that highly populated states would not swing the election.

Yet, in recent decades, the Maine and Nebraska legislatures changed the rules to split the vote.

One of Biden’s more realistic paths to victory includes winning that one vote from Nebraska, so Democrats were crying foul on the changing of the rules.

Keep in mind, however, that the “split” rule has only been in place in Maine since 1972 and in Nebraska since 1992.

When the issue came up for a vote in Nebraska, the GOP-dominated legislature voted to keep the 1992 law in place, upsetting Doug Peterson, who was, until recently, serving as the Chairman of the Second Congressional District of Nebraska.

He was so upset over the vote, he decided to step down.

In his resignation, Peterson stated, “On the advice of my legal counsel, I resigned from the CD 2 Chair on Saturday.

“I cannot comment on much other than the NEGOP is in shambles and I can no longer be associated with them.”

During the 2020 election, Donald Trump beat Joe Biden by 58.2 to 39.2% in the statewide vote, but Biden won the second district, giving him that coveted single electoral vote.

While Trump is dominating Biden's polling again this year, 53-35%, Biden is expected to carry that second district again, which gives him a path to victory without having to dominate all of the battleground states.

If Biden can win the typical blue states, as well as winning Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, as well as that one electoral vote in Nebraska, he would win the presidential election.

In the most recent polling, Biden is winning in PA, down by three points in Michigan, and beating Trump by two points in Wisconsin, so you can see why the Democrats fought so hard to keep that one vote in place.

Just remember this: if Biden wins the 2024 election by hitting the number on the nose due to that one electoral vote that Republicans in the state of Nebraska refused to pull in line with the rest of the country, and as our Framers and Founders intended those votes to be distributed, it is all because of this failed attempt.

If we are going to start splitting electoral college votes, what is the purpose of having it in place? This is just spitting in the face of the men who risked their lives to gain our freedom.
