ND Senator’s Son Sentenced to 28 Years
Last December, Ian Cramer, 43, the son of Senator Kevin Cramer (R-S.D.), crashed his SUV into a police cruiser.
Cramer took off, leading local police on an hour-long chase.
After being charged with manslaughter, he was found guilty after pleading out the case and sentenced to 28 years in prison.

When Cramer initially crashed into the cruiser, there was an officer who was standing behind the cruiser who was killed at the scene.
Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Martin, 53, is the officer who was killed in the crash.
As they say, this case was about as open and shut as it gets, and District Judge Bobbi Weiler officially sentenced Cramer to 38 years, with 10 years of the sentence suspended, as well as three years’ probation.
He did receive one year credit for time served since he has been incarcerated since the crash took place.
The judge also recommended that Cramer receive treatment for mental health and addiction.
Judge Martin stated, “These are not mandatory minimums, which means that you’re probably going to serve a small portion of that 28 years and be out on parole, so that’ll … give you an opportunity to have a second chance that Deputy Martin does not have, nor does his family have.”
According to Senator Cramer, his son has been suffering from hallucinations and delusions.
He further explained that his wife was taking his son to the hospital after he had demanded to talk to his brother, Ike, who has been dead for the better part of six years.
When his wife, Kris, got out of the car, Ian jumped into the driver’s seat and fled.
Ian Cramer admitted to having used meth and bath salts on the day of the incident. He also pleaded guilty in the case.
