Musk: X victim of massive cyberattack
Earlier this week, it was reported that X was down.
Later in the day, Musk gave an interview, saying that the attacks originated from ISP addresses located in Ukraine.
The only problem was that Musk offered up no actual evidence that was the case.
What Happened?
X was hit with multiple outages on Monday, which Musk claimed was a “massive cyberattack against X.”
When Musk appeared on Fox later in the day, he stated that "there was a massive cyberattack to try to bring down the X system, with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area."
The problem, of course, is that Musk did not show any definitive proof that was the case, making this a very dangerous statement when you consider the tension between the United States and Ukraine right now.
It took about five seconds for cybersecurity experts to push back on Musk’s claim.
For instance, Ciaran Martin, a former chief executive of the United Kingdom's cybersecurity agency, stated, “What Mr. Musk has said is wholly unconvincing based on the evidence so far. It's pretty much garbage.”
The real problem here is that Musk is no longer speaking only for Elon Musk. He is now a government official, so he needs to be quite careful about what he says to ensure he is exact.
We see how the media rips apart everything that Donald Trump says, and they may hate Musk more than Trump now.
If this attack did not originate from Ukraine, there will be calls to remove Musk from DOGE altogether, and quite frankly, they will have a legitimate case.
I am not saying that Musk was lying, but I am saying that if he was going to say that, he should have come armed with proof that the attack had originated from Ukraine.
If Musk cannot prove that, Democrats are going to unload on him for making false statements against a United States ally, solely because the Trump administration is trying to pressure Ukraine into signing a mineral rights deal as well as a peace agreement with Russia.
Trump is already being accused of pacifying Russia and betraying Ukraine, and if this turns out to be a fake statement by Musk, there will be calls for him to be removed from our government, and in my opinion, those calls would be justified.
I hope he is telling the truth for Musk’s and the administration’s sake.
