The majority of Americans want former President Donald Trump to face trial before the 2024 presidential election, according to a new poll.
The Politico/Ispos survey showed that about two-thirds of voters want the former president's trial ahead of the election.
Over half of Americans (57 percent) say a Trump trial should occur before the Republican primary, and more (62 percent) say it should happen before the 2024 presidential election.

"More than half of American respondents (57 percent) said a Trump trial should occur before the Republican primary, and even more (62 percent) said it should happen before the 2024 presidential election," the Hill reported.
"When broken down by political party, those views diverge, the survey found. Most Democrats surveyed (77 percent) said the former president should be tried before the Republican primaries, which will occur in early 2024; and 86 percent said he should be tried before the presidential election the following November," it added.

"A plurality of Americans believe Trump should go to prison if convicted on any of the charges, according to the poll," the Daily Caller reported.
"For both indictments — the documents probe and the hush money case — a plurality of Republicans think the former president shouldn’t receive punishment if convicted in either, while the majority of Democrats favor imprisonment in both cases," it continued.
The poll comes as Trump faces an upcoming trial over 37 counts related to allegedly classified documents found in his Florida home last year by the FBI.
So far, the charges have not hurt the former president's poll numbers nationwide. He continues to hold a strong lead over the large GOP field.
Only Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has regularly polled in double digits, with most polls showing all other contenders in single digits.
The charges may be the only thing that could derail Trump's nomination though it is unclear whether he will face a trial until after the 2024 election.
