Mississippi Republican Dead at 66
A freshman House member in the state of Mississippi has shockingly died.
Rep. Andy Stepp (Calhoun County) passed away on Thursday morning.
He was only 66 years old.
He’s Gone
At the time of this report, no cause of death had been revealed for Stepp’s demise.
Mississippi House Speaker Jason White stated, “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of fellow House colleague, Rep. Andy Stepp.
“A freshman member, Andy joined the legislature in 2024, and as a pharmacist and business-owner for 35 years, made a great contribution to legislation.”
Stepp had been in Calhoun County for nearly four decades.
He was a local pharmacy owner as well as a University of Mississippi instructor.
He had only been in office a year at the time of his death.
Stepp actually lost his election in a special election held for the seat that was previously held by state Rep. Jim Beckett.
Perry Van Bailey barely won that election, but Stepp came back and ran again in the general election, this time pulling off the win.
Needless to say, the death hit hard, as Stepp was a prominent figure in the community long before he became involved in politics.
Sen. Ben Suber, a Republican from Calhoun County, stated, “He was always willing to go above and beyond.
“He would meet people at night at the pharmacy and would do whatever he could to help people.”
State law requires a date for the special election to replace Stepp to be announced within 30 days.
The next session begins on January 7, so Stepp’s seat is likely not to be filled until the spring. His constituents likely will not have a voice in the state legislature for the majority of the upcoming session, if at all, until that seat is filled.
