Mike Johnson Approval Rating Tanks
As far as the people of this country are concerned, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has not done a very good job.
According to a new poll, he now has the distinction of being one of the few people on the planet with a lower approval rating than Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
Polling from The Economist/YouGov has Johnson at 30%, 14 points behind Harris and 10 points behind Biden.
Falling Back
As I have stated before, I can appreciate the tight spot that Johnson is in right now, but he is the one who made the promises that he is not keeping.
At the top of that list is no more omnibus legislation, which was the major reason that McCarthy lost his support in the House.
Johnson did not help himself this time by negotiating a spending package that had protections for January 6 Committee members, censorship, a pay raise for members of Congress, and a ton of earmarks.
Everyone in the party revolted over the package, so Johnson tanked it at the last second and put together a new package, but that was not much better.
The new package would have suspended the debt ceiling for another two years, opening the door for more excessive spending once Trump came into office.
Looking at the financials of the package, it would have added another $5 trillion to the national debt.
Donald Trump applauded the deal and recommended passing it, but it was also blocked by House Republicans like Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), who blasted the excessive spending that remained in the bill.
Needless to say, it failed to pass, hitting Johnson with yet another black mark on his very short record.
At this point, it is hard to imagine Johnson holding that gavel in the next term because he clearly does not have the backbone required for the position.
