Mexican Actress Ana Ofelia Murguía Dead at 90

Ana Ofelia Murguía has been acting in movies and TV shows since 1967.

However, she did not become what we would consider “mainstream” until she played the voice of Mama Coco in “Coco,” a Disney production.

Sadly, she passed away on December 31 at the age of 90, leaving Disney fans in tears.

Long Career

As noted, her TV and film career started in 1967, playing Sara Perez de Madero in “La Tormenta,” a TV series.

Murguía soon became a very hot commodity in the Mexican entertainment industry, landing roles in major productions, most notably, “Life Sentence” in 1979, “Mi querido Tom Mix” in 1992, and “The Queen of the Night” in 1992.

During her career, she had 14 nominations, securing the hardware nine different times, including Best Actress for “Mi querido Tom Mix” from the Havana Film Festival and Premious ACE.

In 2018, played the voice of Mama Coco in the Disney animated film, “Coco.”

For her work on that film, she shared the Best Vocal Ensemble in a Feature Film at the Behind the Voice Actors Awards.

The movie won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film in 2018.

Murguía also won the Lifetime Achievement Golden Ariel Award in 2011 for having performed on stage and screen for four decades.

"Coco," sadly, would be her final work in a film, with only one more credit on her resume, playing Abuela Carmelita in the TV show, “José José: El príncipe de la canción.”

In addition to her TV and film work, Murguía was also an accomplished stage actress.

The National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature announced her passing this week, stating, "With deep sadness, we regret the sensitive death of the leading actress Ana Ofelia Murguía, who was part of the stable cast of the National Theater Company of Mexico, and whose artistic career was vital for the performing arts of Mexico.”
