Melania Trump prepared to resume job of selecting WH Christmas decor despite past controversy
As the Trumps prepare to return to the White House, former -- and future -- first lady Melania Trump is committed to undertaking the duties traditional to the role, despite the memory of past controversies.
Specifically, Mrs. Trump is reportedly ready and willing to resume responsibility for Christmas decorations at the people's house, disregarding the embarrassment caused by a leaked conversation from 2018 in which she seemed irritated by the task, as People reports.
Prior Christmas headaches, recalled
During the Trumps' first tenure in the White House, Melania Trump took significant criticism for her choice of holiday décor.
The bold red trees used at the official residence in 2018 were unflatteringly described by some as reminiscent of The Handmaid's Tale or the bloody imagery of the film The Shining, as People noted separately.
It was that same year that a leaked recording captured the then-first lady lamenting that the decorations were even included in her official roster of duty.
“I'm working...my a** off on the Christmas stuff, that you know, who gives a f*** about the Christmas stuff and decorations?” Melania Trump was heard to say.
Seemingly resigned to her role as the president's wife, Melania Trump added rhetorically, “But I need to do it, right?”
Ready to resume role
With several years now under the bridge since that controversy, Mrs. Trump is reportedly ready to take the reins once more come holiday time.
Sources close to the incoming first lady have indicated that she will indeed take on the role that traditionally falls to those in her position, but she will do so in her own, individualized way.
“Melania will do what she is asked as first lady but under her own terms, and that includes decorating the White House for the Christmas holidays,” said a Palm Beach insider.
The source continued, “She will set her own schedule, make her own rules, and use her own taste. She will do what she wants with Barron's needs coming first above everything.”
Summing up the first lady's likely approach was her friend Robin Bernstein, who said, “Melania has exquisite taste and will make the White House beautiful and magical,” and for most Americans, that will be more than enough.
