Meghan McCain blasts Kamala Harris for referencing father for political gain
Kamala Harris has gone out of her way to tout the support of Republican figures such as Liz and Dick Cheney as she continues her campaign against former President Donald Trump, but her references to one late GOP lawmaker has caused a backlash she likely did not expect.
After claiming that longtime Arizona Sen. John McCain once heaped praise on her while standing on the chamber floor, Harris was rebuked by the legislator's daughter, Meghan McCain, who instructed her to stop referencing her father for political gain, lest she tell the truth about his feelings about the now-Democratic Party nominee, as Fox News reports.
Harris invokes McCain
The incident that spurred Meghan McCain's admonition came on Thursday, when Harris spoke at a rally in Chandler, Arizona, as the Arizona Republic noted.
During her remarks, Harris took time to praise then-Sen. John McCain for his efforts to save the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obamacare.
She recounted how, at a time when the legislation appeared to be in peril, McCain strode into the Senate chamber in the week hours of the morning, describing the scene as “like a movie.”
“It needed one vote tso keep in intact,” Harris said of the law. “That vote was the late, great John McCain.”
Harris' mention of McCain did not stop there, as she also claimed that after a particularly heated committee session in which the two participated, the Arizona senator approached the then-California lawmaker and said, “Kid, come over here. You're going to make a great senator!”
Devoted daughter hits back
Clearly none too pleased with Harris' use of her father's name on the campaign trail, Meghan McCain took to social media on Friday to let her feelings be known.
“Now, I know democrats want to reinvent history and turn my Dad into any illusion you guys need him to be depending on the political moment you need to bastardize his memory for...But please don't make me start sharing what I remember him ACTUALLY saying about Kamala Harris,” McCain began.
Cautioning against further references to her father's alleged take Harris or anyone else, McCain added, “And consider this my final warning shot, I will start spilling tea.”
In response to the liberal backlash that ensued following her critique of Harris, McCain returned to X and said, “A lot of really triggered democrats in my timeline who claim they know more about my dad than well...his daughter.”
Millions of Americans are likely now hoping that Harris or one of her surrogates will make the mistake of again referencing the late senator, thus triggering an avalanche of revelations about his true take on the candidate looking for a job promotion many believe she does not deserve.
