Meghan Markle admonishes guest on Netflix show, insists surname is 'Sussex'

During an episode of her new cooking show, With Love, Megan, Meghan Markle put her guest star on the spot -- a decision that came back to bite her online.

Markle called out actress Mindy Kaling for referring to her as “Meghan Markle,” saying she goes by “Sussex” now.

Kaling, famous actress and writer from The Office, took time to appear on an episode of Meghan’s cooking show.

“I don’t think anyone in the world knows that Meghan Markle has eaten Jack in the Box and loves it,” Kaling said in the episode.

“It’s so funny that you keep saying ‘Meghan Markle,’ you know I’m ‘Sussex’ now,” Markle said, correcting Kaling.

“You have kids, and you go, ‘No, I share my name with my children,’” Markle continued.

“I didn’t know how meaningful it would be to me, but it just means so much to go, ‘This is our family name, our little family name,” Markle went on.

“Well, now I know,” Kaling responded to Markle.

Unfortunately for Markle, the Internet never forgot the moment back in 2021 when Markle complained to Oprah Winfrey about having “nearly lost” her name.

People immediately took to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to mock Markle’s change in tune.

“Meghan, 2021: ‘There’s a lot that’s been lost already -- I nearly LOST MY NAME. I mean, there’s a LOSS OF IDENTITY.’ Meghan, 2025: ‘It’s so funny, too, that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now,’’ one X user wrote in a post.

Others called out the how ridiculous Meghan sounded for declaring “Sussex” a last name at all.

“Sussex isn’t even a surname, it’s a title. If she took her husband’s surname it would be Meghan Windsor and so are her kids. Gosh I had no idea she was this dumb,” another X user wrote.

“Meghan Markle married Henry Mountbatten Windsor not Harry Sussex,” yet another post said.

NewsNation has reported that there are rumors Netflix is “done” with Markle’s cooking show after seeing how viewers have responded to Markle.

This isn't the first controversy Markle has experienced during the show's short run. She's already facing accusations of plagiarism after apparently taking the concept of the show almost shot for shot from a previous series featuring Pamela Anderson.
