The hosts of Morning Joe argued that President Joe Biden should pursue former President Donald Trump more aggressively, even saying that Americans need to hear the president refer to his foe as a rapist.
That premise was supported by co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough on Friday's episode of MSNBC's show, as Mediaite reported.
They suggested the president target Trump for criticism because of his sexual abuse of E. Jean Carroll, which prompted one judge to write in a court decision that "Mr. Trump did in fact 'rape' Ms. Carroll as that term is commonly used and understood in contexts outside of New York Penal Law."
According to Scarborough, the American people "might want to hear" Biden accuse Trump of being a rapist or criticize him for allegedly "stealing" nuclear secrets and war plans.
The Biden Team's Choices Up to Now
President Biden and his legal team have been extremely careful not to remark on the avalanche of legal trouble (91 felony counts with a total possible sentence of 713 years in prison), reportedly for the purpose of preserving the impartiality of the pending procedures.
The frustration of many of the president's supporters is reflected in a recent op-ed by New York Times columnist Charles Blow, titled "Dignified Silence Doesn't Work Against Trump," in which Blow outlines the problems with taking such a stance.
Co-hosts Brzezinski and Scarborough agreed with that premise on Friday morning and suggested the president focus attacks on Trump over his sexual abuse of E. Jean Carroll.
The Anchors' Comments
It was suggested that there are "ways" of talking about the accusations and legal troubles that have plagued Trump without mounting a full-on frontal assault.
"The judge said Donald Trump was a rapist," Scarborough said during the Friday broadcast, eliciting a hearty agreement from co-host Brzezinski.
"The judge said Donald Trump raped her. The judge said that that that by any definition used by the US Army, used by the American Medical Association, used by any other organization," Scarborough went on.
"Donald Trump was a rapist. I think people might want to hear that, and they may want to hear that he stole nuclear secrets and they may want to hear from Joe Biden that he’s been charged with stealing secret war plans," he said.
"I mean, these are very relevant to who the next president of the United States should and should not be," the host concluded.
