McConnell Bails on Support for Border Bill After House Resistance

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had supported a bill that was going through the Senate related to the crisis at the border.

GOP House members and leadership have made it quite clear they have no intention of allowing that bill to pass through the House.

McConnell has been in this game long enough to know that with the House leadership digging in, it is best to walk away, and that is what he is doing from the border portion of the Senate legislation.

Dead in the Water

Donald Trump obviously still has a lot of influence in Congress, and that influence is what McConnell believes is slamming the brakes on this legislation.

Trump is clearly going to make immigration a major focus of the 2024 election, and members of the GOP in both chambers that are allied with Trump do not want to do anything that would help Biden and undermine Trump’s campaign on this front.

Trump had posted on Truth Social last week that he did not approve of the deal, posting, “I do not think we should do a Border Deal, at all, unless we get EVERYTHING needed to shut down the INVASION of Millions & Millions of people, many from parts unknown, into our once great, but soon to be great again, Country!

“Also, I have no doubt that our wonderful Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, will only make a deal that is PERFECT ON THE BORDER. Remember, without Strong Borders and Honest Elections, we don’t have a Country!!!”

Punchbowl News reported, “MCCONNELL told a closed meeting of Senate Republicans Wed[nesday afternoon] that the politics of the border has flipped for R[epublicans]s and cast doubt on linking Ukraine and border.”

McConnell himself has apparently caved to Trump’s desire to put this on the back burner, with a Punchbowl further reporting that McConnell told Republicans, “We don’t want to do anything to undermine him.”

This is a fairly crushing blow to Biden, who only last week had predicted that they would be able to get some type of bipartisan border legislation passed, at least in the Senate.

Biden was hoping that he could then point the finger at the House, but now he is left holding the bag.

And if you ask me, it also shows that McConnell's days in leadership are about to come to an end.
