McCarthy Gets First Big Win as Speaker

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was able to notch his first big win as the new Speaker of the House this week.

The much-anticipated rules package was unveiled and put on the floor for a vote.

It passed with a 220-213 vote, with only one Republican refusing to support the new rule package, that vote being Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX).

New Day, New Rules

Among the new rules is actually ending an old rule… the proxy voting rule that was put in place by former Speaker Pelosi (D-CA).

This rule has been abused from the outset but it was how Pelosi ensured she could take advantage of the small edge Democrats had in the House. Now everyone actually has to show up and be in DC when it comes time to vote.

This will also present McCarthy with an organizational challenge to ensure he has all his ducks lined up before putting a partisan piece of legislation on the floor.

If there is one thing that Pelosi was very good at, it was only putting legislation on the floor she was sure would fall in her favor.

House Freedom Caucus members also scored a significant win by ensuring they had three of the nine seats on the House Rules Committee. This is key because this committee dictates how bills are brought to the floor and how they are amended.

Another major provision in the CutGo policy, which will not even allow legislation to be considered if it increases mandatory spending over a five to 10-year period.

Fiscal responsibility… now there is a new concept!

Gonzalez said he could not support the bill because of its “anti-immigration” policies. He also complained about the alleged Defense cuts, but that is a bit of a twist to the facts.

There was pushback on the massive influx of defense spending in the omnibus bill that was just passed largely due to foreign aid packages for Ukraine and South Korea.

It looks like Zelensky will have to find a new sucker to open up their checkbook for him.
