Matt DePerno withdraws Michigan Supreme Court bid

For many, the Michigan Republican Party 2024 state convention in Flint will be remembered for former Michigan Republican Party Chair Kristina Karamo showing up on the convention floor and quickly being escorted out by police.

For Matthew DePerno and his fans, however, it will be remembered as the day he withdrew his bid for a seat on the Michigan Supreme Court.

Even if you were disappointed by DePerno not securing a spot on Michigan's Supreme Court, you may have found the Karamo drama pretty interesting.

Karamo, who was removed from her position earlier this year, apparently showed up on the convention floor in order to show her support for a candidate.

Kristina Karamo did not have the proper credentials to be on the floor however, and the party chair who replaced her, Pete Hoekstra, said that Karamo "was offered a guest pass to observe from the gallery, but declined."

If you've heard of Matthew DePerno before, it's probably because of his lawsuit that made claims "that vote-counting equipment manipulated 2020 election results in Michigan's Antrim County to benefit President Joe Biden and harm Republican Donald Trump. DePerno was the Michigan GOP nominee for attorney general in 2022, losing to Attorney General Dana Nessel, the incumbent Democrat, by about 8 percentage points," according to the Detroit Free Press.

DePerno is currently awaiting trial on felony charges related to an alleged breach of election machines.

The possibility of DePerno's selection to run for a seat on the Michigan Supreme Court candidate was a very interesting prospect heading into the convention.

However, DePerno decided not to move forward, as evidenced when he "sent delegates an email late Friday that said he is withdrawing his bid to be the party's nominee for a four-year term on the court, a race in which he would have faced incumbent Justice Kyra Harris Bolden."

"I’ve come to the conclusion that I can best help President Trump win Michigan by making sure that we have the strongest absentee and early vote program anywhere in the country — stronger than the Democrats," the email read. "It is stronger than anything Republicans have done in our history."

DePerno concluded, "Therefore, I am withdrawing my nomination for Supreme Court and asking fellow delegates to dig deep and think hard about which of the candidates for each of these positions would make the strongest ticket in November."
