Man Dies While Hiking in New Hampshire Mountains at 21

sA Pennsylvania man died while hiking up Mount Madison in New Hampshire, according to authorities.

Jared Apreku, 21, a resident of Stroudsburg, collapsed while walking the trail with friends on Friday.

"His friends called for help and began CPR while an Army National Guard helicopter was dispatched from Concord, about a 35-minute flight from Mount Madison. Ground teams were also deployed as a backup in case the helicopter was unable to reach the hikers’ location due to severe weather," Fox News reported.

"Nearby Mount Washington had gusts of up to 90 mph with a wind chill of 29 degrees as rescuers were responding to the call, officials said," it added.

"Rescuers carried the body of Apreku up and over the summit of Mount Madison to the Madison Spring Hut, where they awaited a National Guard helicopter to take them off the mountain, Fish and Game said," Cherumbu reported.

"After additional rescue members arrived by ground, they carried Apreku to Madison Spring Hut, traversing up and over the mountain’s summit in 'grueling and challenging' conditions that included 'extreme wind gusts and below-freezing temperatures,'" the agency said.

No announcement has been made regarding the type of medical issue the young man had that led to his tragic death on the hiking trail.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help provide funds for Apreku's end-of-life expenses.

"His friends called for help and began CPR in a desperate attempt to save his life on one of the Mount Madison trails. An Army National Guard helicopter was dispatched from Concord but severe winds prevented the helicopter from reaching him in time. He passed away before the rescue crew could get to him," the page noted.

The sad ending to the young man's life has left friends and family in mourning as they seek to move forward after his loss.
