Man Arrested With Illegal Weapons Before Trump Event
A 49-year-old Las Vegas resident, Vem Miller, was taken into custody in California over gun charges shortly before a rally for former President Donald Trump.
Authorities found Miller in possession of firearms and fake identification documents, raising security concerns, though officials confirm there was no immediate threat to Trump.
Sheriff Chad Bianco of Riverside County briefed the media regarding the arrest on Sunday. Law enforcement apprehended Miller near the rally's VIP area while driving a black SUV. His vehicle caught the attention of deputies due to inconsistencies with its documentation.
Discovery Of Firearms Escalates Concerns
Upon further investigation, the authorities discovered that Miller had a shotgun, a loaded handgun, and a high-capacity magazine illegally. The findings prompted immediate action from law enforcement.
Additional inspections revealed that Miller possessed multiple identities. His vehicle was unregistered, and the license plate was counterfeit. The plate reportedly linked him to the Sovereign Citizens movement, known for its anti-government stance.
Sheriff Bianco speculated about Miller's intentions. He expressed gratitude for law enforcement's role in averting a potential threat. However, Bianco clarified that no definitive assassination threat was made.
Sovereign Citizens Movement Raises Alarm
The Sovereign Citizens movement consists of individuals who believe they aren't beholden to federal laws, often fueled by conspiracy theories. Sheriff Bianco associated Miller with this movement, noted for its far-right tendencies.
Miller was detained without resistance and consequently booked on charges related to the unlawful possession of firearms and accessories. After his arrest, Miller expressed surprise and denied any intention to harm Trump, identifying himself as an artist.
He claimed to support the former president and reportedly contacted legal counsel soon after the incident. Conversations ensued with the FBI and Secret Service representatives present.
Official Statements On The Arrest
A source affiliated with Trump's campaign dismissed the notion of an assassination attempt. The campaign publicly appreciated the efforts of law enforcement to maintain safety during the event. It further stated that they remain updated and are carefully analyzing the incident.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff's Office, security for Trump and rally participants was never compromised. The incident did not impact the safety of the public or the former president, they noted in a statement.
Federal Authorities Investigate The Incident
The Department of Justice, along with the Secret Service and FBI, acknowledged their awareness of Miller's arrest. They confirmed that investigations were underway and reiterated that the arrest posed no danger.
In a joint statement, federal agencies emphasized the lack of impact on Trump’s protective operations. As the investigation proceeds, they have not executed federal charges against Miller.
