Major Supreme Court Rulings Await as Term About to End

Arguments are now completed for the current term of the Supreme Court.

This means that over the next month or so, the court will debate and start to release its opinions in these cases.

Among the biggest decisions to come are several abortion cases and the immunity claim of Donald Trump.

Opinions Loom

The most consequential decision released by the court thus far has been to block states from removing Donald Trump from the ballot via the 14th Amendment.

A Trump case also headlines the most important decision that will be handed down as we await the next flurry of opinions.

The court has to rule on presidential immunity, and Trump faces several charges that could be dropped if the court rules in his favor.

The court took a couple of extra hours during oral arguments to question attorneys on this front, but I still do not believe the court will rule on the matter because it expressed disappointment that the lower courts did not narrow this down to specific acts committed by Trump.

My guess here is that this case will get kicked back to the lower court to make that decision, then be revisited by the Supreme Court regarding those specific acts.

If that plays out, then the January 6 case and classified documents case will both be put on hold for the immediate future and have very little chance of seeing the inside of a courtroom before the election is held.

Another major decision to come down will be in the FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine and Danco Laboratories, LLC v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine cases.

Both of these cases are centered around access to the widely used abortion drug, mifepristone.

I hate to say it, but I think conservatives will be disappointed, as the court seemed inclined to allow access to the drug based on comments and questions during oral arguments.

There are also cases on the docket regarding censorship by social media companies, whether abortion can have exceptions based on the mother’s health, and the regulatory power of federal agencies.

There is also one more case regarding January 6 that centers on obstruction charges, which could also impact the Trump cases.

Overall, I think conservatives are going to like the decisions handed down, but there is going to be at least one or two that will create some outrage on both sides of the aisle.

Now it is a waiting game until the court releases its opinions.
