Longtime Democrat Senator Jon Tester Ousted by Trump-backed Candidate
I was very critical of Donald Trump and his candidates for how they all performed in key races in 2020 and 2022.
This time around, though, Donald Trump finally seemed to figure it out save one major seat.
Several key Democrats were removed from office, but I doubt nobody was as surprised as Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) was when Tim Sheehy routed him in his election.
Time to Go
Tester first won his seat in 2006, and it was a stunning upset for a Republican in a state that is widely considered to be very conservative.
Tester backed that up with two more close elections, and going into 2024, most people thought he would win another close race.
Early in the race, he was dominating, but then that lead started to head backward, with Trump-backed Tim Sheehy overtaking him late, then starting to distance himself.
Even so, Trump Senate candidates in tough races had not fared well to this point, so nobody was overly confident the former Navy SEAL could finally remove Tester from the Senate.
When the race was called, Sheehy was up nearly eight points, and it absolutely stunned Democrats.
GOP polling analyst Jon McHenry offered up his two cents, stating, “Tester is a little bit like a cockroach, in that they’re almost impossible to kill. He’s won races he was supposed to lose before. But eventually, cockroaches die, right?”
Another big race for Trump and Republicans was Dave McCormick flipping the seat held by Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), who has completely abandoned Harris and Biden in an effort to keep his seat.
The one person I would have loved for Trump to have moved on from was Kari Lake, who got beat in the gubernatorial race, then decided to run for the Senate.
The race has yet to be called, but Lake is down by 2% with nearly 70% of the vote counted.
She is not dead yet, but I just felt she was too far right for a state that is and has been more moderate.
If she wins, I will print out every bad thing I said about her, add some ketchup, and eat it, but I don't think I am.
That aside, this was just a tremendous election for the GOP and more specifically, all things Donald Trump.
