Legendary 'Good Times,' 'Roots actor John Amos dies at age 84
The entertainment industry is mourning the news that a groundbreaking acting legend, who brought memorable portrayals to the big and small screens has died.
John Amos, perhaps best known for his roles in television's Roots and Good Times as well as in a host of well-loved films, passed away on Aug. 21 in Los Angeles at the age of 84 as the Hollywood Reporter explains.
Iconic career remembered
Amos' passing was confirmed in a statement issued by his son, K.C. Amos, who began, “It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned.”
The grieving son continued, “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold...and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding words in television and film as an actor.”
Indeed, the works referenced by K.C. Amos were voluminous, with his father's role as hard working dad James Evans in the 70s sitcom Good Times among his most memorable.
Amos also received an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Toby in the history-making miniseries Roots, and he garnered additional acclaim for his portrayals of Gordy Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Admiral Percy Fitzwallace on the West Wing.
Movie fans will undoubtedly remember Amos' turn as a fast-food franchise owner in the blockbuster Eddie Murphy film Coming to America, which also featured comedian Arsenio Hall.
Tributes pour in
Not surprisingly, tributes for Amos began to flow as soon as news of his death was announced, as People reported.
Comedian Jimmie Walker, who played Amos' on-screen son “J.J.” on Good Times, responded to the sad development, saying, “John was a great actor and my condolences go out to his entire family, friends and his many, many fans.”
Fellow Good Times castmate BernNadette Stanis, who portrayed Amos' on-screen daughter, Thelma, expressed her sorrow at the profound milestone by writing, “This is truly a sad moment for our cast and friends. We will all miss John Amos our TV dad. Condolences to his children and family. John you will live on through all of the people you have touched throughout your life. We love you and we are going to miss you.”
Also mourning the loss was Martin Lawrence, who took to social media and wrote, “This one hits different. My condolences go out to the family of a true legend, John Amos.”
Richard Schiff of TV's West Wing seemed to encapsulate the feelings of so many, stating, “John was elite among good people. He emitted constant gratitude and grace,” and that is legacy of which any family could be proud.
