Legal Analyst: Cannon Auditioning to be Trump Supreme Court Pick

There is a report in Newsweek that may be one of the silliest reports I have ever seen in a major publication.

According to a Bush-era adviser, he believes that Judge Cannon is auditioning to be Trump’s Supreme Court nominee if Trump wins the election.

He bases this on the delays in the Trump classified documents case.

Trump’s Pick

Trump's selection of Cannon to be elevated to a sitting judge was not out of leftfield, but she is relatively inexperienced on the bench.

Prior to being appointed to the bench by Trump in 2020, Cannon had worked as an Assistant United States Attorney in Florida.

She had several major wins as a prosecutor, including the Mutual Benefits Corporation case and the Scott Rothstein case, which is why Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) recommended her for the bench.

Most Supreme Court appointees have significant time on the bench or have served in high-profile jobs for lengthy period, but still in her early 40s, Cannon really just does not have the experience to even be considered for the bench.

Now, after Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett, I am not saying that disqualifies her, but it would just seem an unlikely nomination when Trump has so many other options.

Richard Painter seems to disagree, posting on X, "Judge Cannon sure looks like she's auditioning for the next open seat on the Supreme Court if Trump wins the election.

“As Norm Eisen, Fred Wertheimer and I have pointed out before, she shouldn't be trying this case.”

Eisen is a Democrat and former federal prosecutor, and Wertheimer is the founder of Democracy 21, a "nonpartisan," nonprofit, organization.

These are not exactly neutral voices in this debate.

And while I understand some people are frustrated with Cannon, has she really made rulings that are so far out of the norm here?

After all, Judge Chutkan put Trump’s case on hold months before Cannon did, and nobody said a peep.

I am not saying that she has made every call properly but then look at the debacle that took place in Judge Merchan’s courtroom.

I could be wrong here, but I just don’t see Trump nominating Cannon, especially after the flack he took for Amy Coney Barrett and her inexperience.
