LA Times editor resigns after paper declines to endorse presidential candidate
Los Angeles Times editor Mariel Garza has RESIGNED over the news outlet’s decision to not endorse Vice President Kamala Harris.
Garza resigned from the Times. saying that she is “not okay with us being silent.”
“In dangerous times, honest people need to stand up. This is how I’m standing up,” Garza said.
“I didn’t think we were going to change our readers’ minds -- our readers, for the most part, are Harris supporters. We’re a very liberal paper. I didn’t think we were going to change the outcome of the election in California,” Garza continued.
“But two things concern me: This is a point in time where you speak your conscience no matter what. And an endorsement was the logical next step after a series of editorials we’ve been writing about how dangerous Trump is to democracy, about his unfitness to be president, about his threats to jail his enemies. We have made the case in editorial after editorial that he shouldn’t be reelected,” the now-former editor went on.
However, there seems to be one large oversight on the part of Garza and Kamala Harris -- endorsements are EARNED.
What has Harris done to earn an endorsement from the Los Angeles Times?
The list of entities and media outlets that are “against” former President Donald Trump yet refuse to endorse Kamala Harris is long and growing longer.
Just because an institution opposes one candidate does NOT mean they have to endorse the other.
No one is entitled to endorsements, despite what Harris and her supporters may think.
Mariel Garza might not agree with her employer's endorsement decision, but the truth of the matter is that NOBODY should be endorsing Harris until she proves herself trustworthy.
It is okay to demand more out of your presidential candidate.
Harris should be doing all she can to EARN the trust of the American people. She doesn't simply get to demand it.
The sooner supporters of Harris wake up and realize that Harris is not entitled to endorsements from prominent liberal outlets, the better.
