Key GOP Senate Candidate Accused of Lying About Wound
Another politician is being accused of exaggerating his military record, but this time, it is a Republican running for a key Senate seat.
Tim Sheehy, who is hoping to unseat Senator Jon Tester (D-MT), is being accused of lying about his claim of having been shot in the arm.
A former Park Service Ranger claims the wound was from a weapon having gone off accidentally.
True or False
The former Park Ranger, Kim Peach, claims that Sheehy was wounded during a family trip in Montana when a gun fell out of his vehicle and accidentally discharged.
Peach stated, “At the time, he was obviously embarrassed about it. And you know, he admitted to what I was there for — the gun going off in the park.
“He knows the truth and the truth isn’t complicated. It’s when you start lying things get complicated.”
Records back up the incident, with Sheehy having been fined $525 for the discharged weapon.
Sheehy has admitted to lying but says he lied to the park ranger to cover up a friendly fire wound.
Sheehy claims that in 2012, friendly fire may have been responsible for a wound to his arm, but he did not want to get another SEAL in trouble, so when he fell and wounded himself in 2015, he had the ideal cover story for the wound.
Attorneys for Sheehy, Daniel Watkins and Dustin Pusch, responded, “There is no physical evidence suggesting that Mr. Sheehy discharged his firearm at Glacier National Park. Because it didn’t happen.”
The Sheehy campaign has also pushed back against the allegation, stating, “Anyone trying to take away from the fact that Tim Sheehy signed up for war as a young man and spent most of his 20s in some of the most dangerous places in the world is either a partisan hack, a journalist with an agenda, or outright a disgusting person.”
Sheehy has been awarded a Purple Heart for other wounds as well as a Bronze Star.
I really hope that Sheehy is telling the truth here because we really need that seat and would hate to see someone with a distinguished military career shamed because of making up a stupid story when he clearly already had been wounded in combat.
