Justice Amy Coney Barrett faces Republican backlash
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett is facing more criticism following another decision in which she voted with her liberal colleagues.
The decision, according to Breitbart News, is the one the court released on Wednesday, regarding the U.S. Agency for Internation Development (USAID).
As we will see, the court ruled against Trump, in a 5-4 split decision.
The five included the three liberal justices plus Barrett and Chief Justice John Roberts, while the four included Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Brett Kavanaugh, and Neil Gorsuch.
The details:
Fox News reports:
At issue in the case was how quickly the Trump administration needed to pay the nearly $2 billion owed to aid groups and contractors for completed projects funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), at a time when the administration has issued a blanket freeze on all foreign spending in the name of government "efficiency" and eliminating waste.
These are part of the foreign aid funds that Trump has frozen. This led to a lawsuit, which is currently playing out in the courts.
Breitbart reports, "The Supreme Court sided with a district court judge Wednesday who had ruled the Trump administration could not stop $2 billion in U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) payments to intended recipients."
It ought to be noted, however, that this was just a preliminary ruling, which means that, ultimately, this matter could still be decided in the Trump administration's favor. The question was what to do while the case plays out in court, and the Supreme Court has now ruled that Trump essentially has to allow the funds to be distributed.
Alito was among those who blasted the decision, calling it an "unfortunate misstep." He was joined by Thomas, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh in his dissent.
Barrett strikes again
Barrett and Roberts, however, joined the liberals. By now, it is not that surprising that Roberts did so. Barrett, however, is a different story.
She was chosen by Trump, during his first administration, to solidify a conservative majority on the high court, but she has not done so. Instead, she has voted with the liberals on a number of high profile cases, including this one.
While Trump has remained silent about the situation, his supporters have not. They have begun to criticize Barrett - harshly.
Mike Davis, a former clerk of Gorsuch's, put it this way, "She is a rattled law professor with her head up her a--." he also referred to her as "weak and timid." Others called her a "DEI appointee."
Whether Barrett deserves this criticism is ultimately up to you. At the very least, it has to be said that this is not the pro-Trump, conservative Supreme Court that the left tries to claim it is, and Barrett is a part of the reason why.
