Judge Blocks Whitmer’s Plan to Import Radioactive Waste

Democrat Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was about to take ownership of 6,000 cubic yards of toxic waste.

This was going to happen even though there has been significant pushback from residents, lawmakers, and environmentalists.

That delivery is now on hold, however, as a local judge granted a temporary restraining order to block the delivery.

Not So Fast

The toxic waste transfer was approved by Whitmer’s administration.

The waste was scheduled to come from the Manhattan’s Project’s disposal site in upstate New York.

This is the waste from the development of the atomic bomb during World War II.

It was scheduled to be delivered to the Van Buren Township’s Wayne Disposal later this month, but that has all been put on hold now.

Numerous Wayne County communities, including Canton Township, filed suit to block the shipments.

Supervisor Anne Marie Graham-Hudak explained the resistance, stating, “The people in New York got details about what was happening, even the roads (they) were going to use leaving town.

“We got nothing, and they basically said, ‘We aren’t required to tell you anything.’ That’s sad in so many ways.”

Attorney for the plaintiffs, Brandon Grysko, added, “(Residents) have a right to be secure, to be safe.

“Fire departments have an obligation to provide that. The manner in which this has all come about has essentially jeopardized the right of the people to be safe and the right of the communities to provide that level of safety.”

According to Whitmer’s office, the waste poses no danger to the local community, with T.R. Wentworth II, manager of EGLE’s Radiological Protection Section, stating, “The state doesn’t have any concerns for this material from a health and safety standpoint.”

With all the problems Michigan has had on this front over the years, I have to say, it is a bit of surprise that Whitmer would even consider such a transfer, but that just goes to show you how much she really cares about the health of her residents.

I am sure somewhere along the line, there was a fat donation to her campaign for her to accommodate this transfer.
