We finally have a candidate for House Speaker for the Republicans, but it is still not going to be an easy battle.
Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) beat Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) in a very close vote.
After the vote was taken and Scalise was declared the winner, Jordan encouraged the House to rally behind Scalise to support him in the floor vote.
The Republicans do not have many votes to spare here, as their majority is only razor-thin in the House right now.
Jordan knows this and he also knows there are a couple of stubborn heads in his caucus, so, he stepped up to put his support behind Scalise.
I had predicted the entire caucus would get behind the eventual winner, but that is not happening.
Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Chip Roy (R-TX) have already gone on record as saying they will not support Scalise if the vote is held now. There were also two or three other members who either would not support Scalise or wanted Rep. McCarthy (R-CA) reinstalled as Speaker.
Point being, Scalise may still not have enough votes, and there is no way they are going to put this on the floor until they are assured they have enough votes to carry Scalise the gavel.
I want to know why McCarthy has not stepped up and why Donald Trump has not done the same.
They both have called themselves great leaders and right now we need to get this caucus united because there are American lives at risk in Israel and we are literally on the brink of WWIII if the Israel conflict gets out of control in terms of more countries joining the fight.
We also have domestic issues to address, such as the border and spending bills.
The moment we found out American hostages were taken and Americans lost their lives, the dynamic of the Israel conflict changed dramatically.
If this were a different time, I could understand the posturing, but now is not the time for this.
McCarthy needs to step up and tell his diehard supporters to fall in line behind Scalise and Trump, as a Jordan supporter, needs to encourage them to do the same.
There are American lives at risk, so suck it up and let’s get our people home.
