Johnson Blocks Biden’s $24 Billion Ukraine Request
It would appear that Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is finally shutting off the faucet for Ukraine until Donald Trump takes office.
Joe Biden recently asked Congress for another $24 billion aide package.
Johnson stated that he denied the request, believing it should be Trump who decides if more aid will be given to Ukraine to help fund its war against Russia.
Too Late
Biden clearly wanted to get as much aid into the hands of Ukraine as possible before leaving office.
As far as we can tell, Biden has disbursed all the aid that was previously approved, but he wanted to go to the well one more time.
But, with Trump winning the election, Johnson has finally decided that enough is enough, at least until Trump officially takes office.
When asked about the denial, Johnson responded, “As we predicted and as I said to all of you weeks before the election, if Donald Trump is elected it will change the dynamic of the Russian war on Ukraine, and we’re seeing that happen.”
He continued, “So it is not the place of Joe Biden to make that decision now, we have a newly elected president and we’re going to wait and take the new commander in chief’s direction on all that, so I don’t expect any Ukraine funding to come up now.”
Biden’s $24 billion package included $16 billion in military supplies via the Pentagon and $8 billion for security assistance.
Trump has stated that he will try to have this war ended before he even takes office, and he has already met with President Zelensky.
Since that meeting, Zelensky has caved on the issue of ceding territory to Russia, now saying he will do so if NATO agrees to put Ukraine under its protective “umbrella.”
I have already stated this seems like a reasonable solution to the problem, as Putin has already stated that admitting Ukraine to NATO could be considered an act of war.
While I think Putin would put up a stink about Ukraine getting NATO protections, which it effectively already has, the fact that Ukraine would not be made part of NATO should pacify him.
